Complications of Surgery
- Despite considerable care during both types of surgical procedure, there are chances of developing complications which could occur due to many reasons. Complications can arise during surgery caused by, either when a surgical instrument is being placed for the first time during lap choly (as the structures are not visible until the endoscope passes) or when there is an injury to the bowel contents during the surgery itself. Complications can arise post-surgery too. Complications include; injury to the bowel contents and blood vessels and which might lead to haemorrhage. Injury to the bile and hepatic ducts and the gallbladder itself, which could result in leakage of bile into the abdominal cavity and if the bile is infected, then it leads to peritonitis and septic shock. Both of these complications are life threatening and requires immediate treatment.
- Other complications include injury to the diaphragm when air is being introduced into the abdomen for lap choly, bleeding from incision sites, and damage to bowel organs by laser. If the patient puts extra strain on the abdomen either by coughing or straining while defecating or taking up exercise early after surgery, herniation of abdominal contents can occur as a late complication through the site of incision and the structures might strangulate. Hence the patients are advised for a complete rest until they recover get a treatment for conditions which promote excessive straining.
