The gallbladder develops from the caudal part of the hepatic diverticulum (hepatic bud) as a solid outgrowth of cells. Expansion of the outgrowth forms the gallbladder while its narrow stem forms the cystic duct. Later the gallbladder and the cystic duct become canalized. The stalk connecting the hepatic and the cystic ducts to the duodenum becomes the common bile duct.
